DPS reports Mardee Matlack killed in Canyon-area intersection crash

RANDALL, TX, (December 05, 2025) – A Canyon woman was killed and two others suffered minor injuries following a two-vehicle crash late Friday night at a Randall County intersection, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS officials reported that at approximately 10:33 p.m., a 1995 Cadillac Deville traveling westbound on West Cemetery Road ran a red light at South Soncy Road and entered the intersection. The Cadillac was struck by a southbound 2010 Chrysler Town & Country driven by 56-year-old Mardee Matlack.

Matlack died at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the Cadillac and her passenger were transported to Northwest Texas Hospital with minor injuries. Weather and road conditions were clear and dry, DPS said. The crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Running red lights continues to be a leading cause of preventable crashes, despite drivers being aware of the risks. On average, the Federal Highway Administration reports seven fatal crashes and over 1,000 injury crashes occur daily at signalized intersections across the U.S.

While authorities continue to investigate the cause and liability of the collision, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized that an independent investigation by a skilled attorney is essential.

“In addition to law enforcement efforts, an attorney can re-interview key witnesses, review surveillance footage from the scene, and obtain phone or texting records of the responsible party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

She added, “Time is critical in cases like this, and families must ensure that important evidence is collected and reviewed efficiently to protect their legal rights.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Mardee Matlack may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members may seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional distress, pain and suffering, and other impacts resulting from a catastrophic accident.

“Losing a loved one is both a deeply emotional and often an economic burden,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal.

“If your family has been affected by another person’s negligence, a wrongful death attorney can provide the guidance needed to ensure justice is pursued and your legal rights are fully protected.”
