Manchac rear-end collision on I-55 kills 88-year-old Lula Kinchen

MANCHAC, La., (Nov. 22, 2025) — An 88-year-old woman, Lula Kinchen, tragically died Saturday night following a multi-vehicle rear-end collision on Interstate 55 in Manchac, authorities reported.

According to the Louisiana State Police, the crash happened around 9 p.m. just ahead of the Manchac Bridge when an Infiniti SUV rear-ended a Honda CR-V. After the initial impact, a Nissan Maxima struck the Infiniti on its left side. Both the Infiniti and Nissan caught fire following the collision.

Kinchen, who was a passenger in the Nissan, suffered severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where she later died. The incident remains under investigation by LSP.

REAR-END CRASH INVESTIGATION

Rear-end crashes remain one of the most common types of roadway collisions, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that distracted driving contributes to nearly 90 percent of them. Typical distractions include texting, adjusting in-car controls, looking at roadside activity, or interacting with passengers. Other contributing factors can include speeding, tailgating, impaired driving, or aggressive behavior behind the wheel.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), rear-end collisions lead to roughly 950,000 injuries and about 2,000 fatalities every year. Candice Bond, a seasoned auto accident attorney, noted that in cases like this, conducting an independent investigation early is essential to preserving evidence for a victim’s grieving family.

“In addition to the important work done by law enforcement, an attorney can secure critical evidence needed to show whether a driver acted negligently, which often requires multiple resources,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst with Accident Injury News. “A lawyer can re-interview key witnesses, review available surveillance footage, and obtain phone or text records of the at-fault driver. By acting as an advocate, an attorney helps guide a family compassionately during an extremely difficult time while protecting their legal rights.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family of Lula Kinchen may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Such claims may allow surviving relatives to seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional pain, suffering, and other damages associated with a tragic or unexpected loss.

“We understand the tremendous challenges families face after losing a loved one, and ensuring their rights are protected is essential,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney will monitor the ongoing investigation and work to ensure the family’s best interests are represented. Relatives of wrongful death victims may pursue damages for the loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering following a catastrophic accident.”
