Man injured in Waipahu car vs pedestrian collision HI, HPD says

WAIPAHU, HI, (April 21, 2026) – A pedestrian was critically injured Tuesday afternoon after being struck on a sidewalk in Waipahu, according to the Honolulu Police Department.

Authorities said the incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. when a northbound vehicle on Mokuola Street left the roadway near Waipahu Street and crashed into a tree. The vehicle then continued onto the sidewalk, where it struck a 32-year-old man walking northbound.

The victim was pinned beneath the vehicle and had to be extricated by the Honolulu Fire Department. He was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

The 22-year-old driver of the vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to a hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Pedestrians remain among the most vulnerable road users, facing significant risks even while walking on sidewalks. While everyone is encouraged to stay alert, drivers carry the primary responsibility to operate vehicles safely and avoid collisions.

In Hawaii, an estimated 38 pedestrians were killed and many others injured in traffic incidents in 2024, according to a report from the Governors Highway Safety Association.

“Having the right resources is crucial when investigating a pedestrian accident and establishing negligence,” said Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney and Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

Bond emphasized: “In many situations, pedestrians have the right of way, whether or not they are in a marked crosswalk. Drivers are expected to yield and remain vigilant to prevent such incidents.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the injured victim may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim.

Formica noted that serious injuries can bring overwhelming stress, affecting a person’s family life, employment, finances, and overall well-being.

“Hiring an attorney is important when filing a personal injury claim, as legal counsel can negotiate with insurance companies on behalf of the victim,” Formica said.

“Insurance companies may attempt to push for quick settlements that do not reflect the true value of a claim. An attorney will advocate strongly to ensure fair compensation and proper treatment.”
