HPD: Man critically injured in Makiki moped accident

MAKIKI, HI, (May 02, 2026) – A 23-year-old man was critically injured early Saturday morning following a collision involving a moped and a passenger vehicle in Makiki, according to the Honolulu Police Department.

Authorities said the crash occurred at approximately 12:20 a.m. when a vehicle traveling eastbound on Wilder Avenue attempted to turn left at Makiki Street and collided with a westbound moped.

The impact ejected the moped rider, who sustained critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials confirmed that no other injuries were reported.

The incident remains under investigation.

MOPED CRASH INVESTIGATION

Moped and scooter crashes led to an estimated 50,000 emergency department visits and at least 27 fatalities between 2017 and 2019, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Data shows that injuries and fatalities involving mopeds and scooters have been increasing.

Candice Bond, an experienced moped and motor scooter accident attorney, noted that crashes like this are often linked to negligent driving.

Bond emphasized that in situations like this, a timely and independent investigation is crucial to protect the rights of victims and their families.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important when investigating a scooter accident case and demonstrating that there was negligence on the part of a motorist,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“Moped riders, like pedestrians and bicyclists, are considered vulnerable users of the transportation system, and drivers of larger vehicles must exercise caution around them.”

“Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and must be thoroughly examined.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the victim may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, noted that the stress and uncertainty following a serious injury can be overwhelming and impact all areas of life, including family, work, finances, and overall well-being.

“It is important for victims to retain an attorney when filing a personal injury claim, allowing proper negotiation with insurance companies,” Formica said.

“Insurance companies are often unconcerned with the growing costs an injured person may face. An attorney can help protect victims and advocate on their behalf, ensuring accountability and fair compensation,” he added.
