Mai Thi Tran killed, two hurt in Colmesneil wrong-way accident

Colmesneil, TX, (May 04, 2026) – A tragic wrong-way crash on U.S. Highway 69 near Colmesneil on Monday morning claimed the lives of two drivers and left two others injured, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Authorities said the collision occurred at approximately 8 a.m. when a northbound Nissan, driven by a 31-year-old Colmesneil resident, crossed into oncoming traffic. The vehicle collided head-on with a southbound Toyota operated by 68-year-old Mai Thi Tran of Jasper.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two passengers traveling in the Nissan, ages 28 and 22, sustained injuries and were transported to a hospital in Kingwood. Their conditions have not been disclosed.

The incident remains under investigation as officials work to determine the contributing factors behind the crash.

FATAL WRONG-WAY ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Troopers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), approximately 400 people lose their lives each year in wrong-way accidents. Driver error is cited as the leading cause, with factors such as impaired driving, distractions, poor roadway design, and driver confusion frequently contributing to these incidents.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News, emphasized the importance of conducting an independent investigation following serious crashes.

“In addition to a police report, an attorney will carefully examine all possible contributing factors,” said Bond. “Legal teams have the resources to bring in expert witnesses, review driver histories, identify witnesses, and analyze insurance coverage. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can help guide families through a difficult time while ensuring their legal rights are preserved.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Mai Thi Tran may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families who lose loved ones in fatal accidents can seek compensation for damages such as loss of companionship, funeral costs, emotional suffering, and other related hardships.

“The grief and emotional toll following such a loss can be devastating,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. “We understand the challenges families face during these times, and protecting their legal rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation and help ensure the family’s best interests remain a priority.”
