Madera County crash kills Esmeralda Gutierrez, injures several

MADERA, CA (June 30, 2026) — An 18-year-old woman was killed and several other people were injured Tuesday night in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Avenue 17 and Road 28 1/2 in Madera County, according to authorities.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash occurred at approximately 9:46 p.m. Investigators determined that a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu traveling east on Avenue 17 entered the intersection after failing to stop at a stop sign.

Authorities identified the driver of the Malibu as 18-year-old Madera resident Esmeralda Marcela Gutierrez. The Malibu entered the path of a southbound 2019 Jeep Wrangler driven by a 25-year-old Madera woman, causing the Chevrolet to strike the Jeep on its right side.

Gutierrez was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 19-year-old male passenger in the Malibu sustained major injuries and was transported to a hospital. Another occupant of the Chevrolet suffered minor injuries. The Jeep driver and one passenger were also injured.

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the collision.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Every year, millions of people suffer injuries in traffic crashes across the United States, many of which have life-changing consequences. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 2.2 million people were injured in motor vehicle accidents nationwide in 2023.

While investigators continue to determine the cause of the collision and liability, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, said it is essential for families to obtain an independent investigation conducted by an experienced attorney.

“In addition to the diligent efforts of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview key witnesses, review surveillance footage from the crash scene, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Time is critical in cases such as this, and it is important for the victim’s family to ensure that evidence is preserved and reviewed as quickly as possible.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the results of the investigation, the victims injured in the crash may have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, noted that the stress and uncertainty following a serious injury can be overwhelming, affecting every aspect of a person’s life, including family, employment, finances, and overall well-being.

“It is important for injured victims to retain an attorney when pursuing a personal injury claim, allowing legal counsel to negotiate with insurance companies on their behalf,” Formica added.

“Insurance companies frequently attempt to persuade victims to accept quick settlements for far less than their claims may be worth. An attorney will strongly advocate for their client to help ensure they are treated fairly and receive appropriate compensation.”
