Lori Freeman dies after moped collides with SUV in Cherokee County

CHEROKEE, SC, (September 23, 2026) – A 51-year-old Gaffney woman was killed Wednesday night when her moped collided with an SUV in Cherokee County, according to authorities.

The victim was identified as Lori Michelle Freeman of Gaffney.

The crash happened shortly after 9 p.m. at the intersection of Peachoid Road and Whelchel Road.

Initial reports indicate that Freeman was traveling west on Peachoid Road when an eastbound 2013 Chevrolet SUV attempted to turn left onto Whelchel Road and collided with the moped.

Freeman was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, no one else was injured in the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, moped and scooter accidents resulted in an estimated 50,000 emergency department visits and at least 27 fatalities between 2017 and 2019. Sadly, the Safety Commission reports that moped and scooter injuries and deaths are increasing.

Candice Bond, an experienced motor scooter accident attorney, emphasized that in cases such as this, it is imperative to have an independent investigation conducted promptly to protect the rights of a victim’s family.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important when investigating a scooter accident case and demonstrating that there was negligence on the part of a motorist,” said Bond, managing partner of Bond Legal.

“Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that must be carefully considered and thoroughly examined.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Lori Michelle Freeman may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress after a catastrophic accident.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We understand what families are forced to go through, and protecting their rights is vital. A wrongful death lawyer will continue to monitor the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
