Lorena Lopez Fatally Struck in Apple Valley Intersection Crash

APPLE VALLEY, CA — June 27, 2026 — A two-vehicle collision Saturday evening in Apple Valley claimed the life of a 33-year-old woman and sent three others to the hospital, including two young children, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (SBCSO).

The crash occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m. at the intersection of Wichita Road and Zuni Road. Authorities said a 2022 Toyota Camry, traveling north on Wichita Road, failed to stop at a posted stop sign and struck a westbound 2021 Nissan Altima. The Toyota caught fire following the impact.

Lorena Lopez, 33, of Apple Valley, who was behind the wheel of the Nissan Altima, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two child passengers in her vehicle sustained injuries and were transported to area trauma centers for treatment. The driver of the Toyota was pulled from the burning vehicle and was also taken to a hospital.

The SBCSO Major Accident Investigative Team is conducting an ongoing investigation into the crash. Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact the Apple Valley Police Department.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the Federal Highway Administration, approximately 40 percent of car collisions occur at road intersections, with the primary causes often linked to drivers failing to stop at posted stop signs or traffic lights. Factors such as impatience, reckless behavior, and distracted driving frequently contribute to these dangerous scenarios. Candice Bond, a seasoned auto accident attorney, emphasized that an independent investigation is essential to safeguarding the rights of victims and their families.

“It is imperative to come to a determination of the exact cause of these types of accidents. An attorney has the resources to review applicable insurance coverage, hire expert witnesses, run background checks, and locate witnesses. We carefully guide the family of the victim through the process,” said Candice Bond, a managing partner with Bond Legal.

She stressed that in cases like this, launching an independent probe as early as possible is critical to preserving vital evidence before it is lost or compromised.

“In addition to a police report, an attorney will carefully review what may have contributed to the crash,” said Bond. “A lawyer has the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct driver background checks, locate witnesses to the crash, and review applicable insurance coverage. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide an injury victim through what can be a complicated process,” Bond added. Accident Injury News will continue to follow developments in this case.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of all ongoing investigations, the family of Lorena Lopez may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving loved ones of wrongful death victims are often entitled to seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and pain and distress in the wake of a devastating accident such as this.

Bond noted, “Grieving families of victims are sometimes overwhelmed by the legal processes that are in place to protect their rights. An attorney can be a valuable and compassionate resource to help guide a family during this difficult time, and ensure that those left behind receive the restitution they are entitled to.”

Families navigating such circumstances are encouraged to consult with a qualified personal injury or wrongful death attorney as early as possible to understand and preserve their legal options.
