Lionell Alexander tragically killed in St. Louis hit-and-run accident

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — A 58-year-old man was died on June 20 after being struck by a vehicle in north St. Louis.

Lionell Alexander was crossing the street at the intersection of W. Florissant and Pope Avenues when a vehicle struck him. The crash occurred near the border of the city’s O’Fallon and Penrose neighborhoods.

The driver fled the scene immediately after striking Alexander. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the intersection following reports of the collision.

Paramedics transported Alexander to an area hospital with critical injuries. He succumbed a short time later.

On Wednesday, police released a photo of the vehicle that struck and killed Alexander. Authorities identified it as a light-colored Mercury Mountaineer with a Missouri temporary tag on the rear. Police described the driver as a woman with a mole on the left side of her face. The suspect was wearing a bonnet at the time of the crash.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is seeking public assistance in locating the suspect.

FATAL ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Missouri experiences hit-and-run incidents in approximately 18% of all traffic crashes, according to legal sources. With 992 total traffic fatalities in 2023, this percentage suggests around 179 fatal hit-and-run crashes occurred statewide.

Missouri law treats leaving the scene as a serious offense, with penalties ranging from 6-12 points on driver’s licenses to potential felony charges depending on crash severity. The state requires uninsured motorist coverage to protect victims when hit-and-run drivers flee and cannot be identified.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, said in cases such as this it is imperative to have an independent investigation conducted by a seasoned attorney in a timely manner to protect a victim’s rights.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important in order to investigate a hit-and-run accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, a Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and must thoroughly be examined. These procedures are necessary for helping someone who has lost a loved one at the hands of a hit-and-run driver receive the justice and monetary compensation that they deserve.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM
Pending the results of the investigation, the family of Lionell Alexander may be entitled to a wrongful death claim for funeral expenses, the loss of love and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“An incident is considered a wrongful death when either a person or entity commits a wrongful or negligent act resulting in a person’s death,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal. “When vehicle accident fatalities result from unsafe driving, aggressive or distracted driving, speeding, or driving under the influence, family members are usually left with the option to pursue a civil action against the responsible motorist.”
