Lake Mary Hit-and-Run Kills Danielle Akers, Suspect Held

LAKE MARY, FL (June 30, 2026) — A hit-and-run crash Tuesday night in Lake Mary killed one person and led to the arrest of a 22-year-old Longwood resident, according to the Lake Mary Police Department.

The victim was identified as 42-year-old Danielle Akers, of Oviedo.

Preliminary reports indicate two vehicles were involved in the crash, which occurred around 11 p.m. near West Lake Mary Boulevard and Wheelhouse Lane. Responding officers found a person, later identified as Akers, unresponsive at the scene. She was pronounced dead at the site, officials said.

The 22-year-old Longwood driver was arrested a short distance from the crash scene and booked on multiple charges, including DUI manslaughter.

The crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

A motorist involved in a hit-and-run crash is legally required to remain at the scene and notify law enforcement. Failure to do so can result in criminal charges and additional legal consequences.

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA) Foundation for Traffic Safety, more than one hit-and-run crash occurs every minute on U.S. roads.

“Having the right resources is essential to investigating a hit-and-run case and proving negligence,” said Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney and Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“Road conditions, signage visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors that must be thoroughly examined. These procedures are necessary to help those who have lost a loved one receive the justice they deserve.”

Added Bond, national analyst for Accident Injury News, “A driver must always exercise great care behind the wheel.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Danielle Akers may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims can seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident such as this one.

“The stress and sorrow can be overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal. “We understand what families are forced to go through, and ensuring their rights are protected is essential. A wrongful death attorney will stay updated on the official investigation and help make certain that the family’s legal rights and best interests are protected.”
