Klamath Falls teen Modoc Shadley dies after collision with semi-truck

KLAMATH FALLS, OR, (May 16, 2026) – An 18-year-old Klamath Falls man was killed early Saturday morning in a pedestrian collision involving a semi-truck near Klamath Falls, according to the Oregon State Police.

Authorities said the crash occurred at approximately 4:14 a.m. on U.S. Route 97 near milepost 264. Investigators reported that Modoc Shadley was struck by a Freightliner tractor-trailer operated by a 43-year-old man from California.

Shadley suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials have not yet released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the collision. The incident remains under investigation by the Oregon State Police.

FATAL PEDESTRIAN SEMI-TRUCK ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), many factors can contribute to semi-truck crashes, including brake defects, speeding, prescription medication use, unfamiliar roads, lane drifting, improper maneuvering, and driver fatigue.

Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney, said timely independent investigations are critical in cases involving tractor-trailers to help safeguard the rights of a victim’s family.

“Tractor-trailer crashes are often complex, and many factors can play a role in these types of accidents,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “A skilled attorney can protect a grieving family from trucking companies, which often send their own investigators to crash sites and possess a variety of resources they can utilize to defend a negligent truck driver.”

Bond added that attorneys can assist families by hiring expert witnesses, reviewing driver histories, locating witnesses, and examining insurance coverage while compassionately guiding loved ones through the legal process.

Sadly, statistics show that a person is killed or seriously injured every 15 minutes in an accident involving a semi-truck. FMCSA data indicates that approximately 5,000 people lose their lives in semi-truck crashes annually.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending results of the investigation, the family of Modoc Shadley may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members may seek compensation for loss of companionship, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic accident such as this one.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal and also a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

Formica noted that families facing such heartbreaking circumstances should have their legal rights protected. He added that a wrongful death attorney can monitor the official investigation and help ensure the family’s best interests remain safeguarded throughout the process.
