PLANT CITY, FL, (May 11, 2026) — A 14-year-old Plant City High School freshman died Wednesday from injuries he sustained after being struck by a pickup truck earlier this week in Plant City, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities identified the victim as Khali Peñón.
Deputies responded Monday evening to the intersection of North Wilder Road and Bryce Ravine Avenue following reports of a pedestrian collision. Investigators said Peñón was struck by a pickup truck and suffered a traumatic brain injury in the crash.
Emergency crews transported the teenager to a nearby hospital for treatment, but he later succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.
Family members and community members are mourning the loss of Peñón, who was a freshman at Plant City High School and the brother of six siblings. He was active in the Plant City Little League, the Plant City Dolphins football team, and the school’s violin program.
Officials have not stated whether speed, impairment, or other factors contributed to the collision. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident.
