Khali Peñón Dies Days After Serious Pedestrian Crash in Plant City

PLANT CITY, FL, (May 11, 2026) — A 14-year-old Plant City High School freshman died Wednesday from injuries he sustained after being struck by a pickup truck earlier this week in Plant City, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities identified the victim as Khali Peñón.

Deputies responded Monday evening to the intersection of North Wilder Road and Bryce Ravine Avenue following reports of a pedestrian collision. Investigators said Peñón was struck by a pickup truck and suffered a traumatic brain injury in the crash.

Emergency crews transported the teenager to a nearby hospital for treatment, but he later succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.

Family members and community members are mourning the loss of Peñón, who was a freshman at Plant City High School and the brother of six siblings. He was active in the Plant City Little League, the Plant City Dolphins football team, and the school’s violin program.

Officials have not stated whether speed, impairment, or other factors contributed to the collision. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Each year, thousands of pedestrians are killed on roadways across the United States. According to a report from the Governors Highway Safety Association, approximately 3,304 pedestrians were struck and killed by drivers during the first half of 2024.

“Having the appropriate resources is critical when investigating a pedestrian accident and establishing negligence,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

“Factors such as roadway conditions, visibility of traffic signs, and street lighting can all contribute to these crashes and must be carefully reviewed. Thorough investigations are essential in helping families obtain the justice they deserve,” Bond added.

“In some cases, accident reconstruction specialists are needed to determine exactly what occurred. These resources are important in helping victims and families recover compensation for losses suffered after a collision,” said Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is generally the responsibility of drivers to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of the victim may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Relatives of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship and income, emotional suffering, funeral costs, and other damages following a tragic or catastrophic accident,” Formica said.

An experienced attorney can serve as an advocate for grieving families, helping guide them through the legal process while protecting their rights during a difficult time.

“Insurance companies frequently attempt to pressure victims into accepting quick settlements that are far below the true value of a case,” Formica added. “An attorney will strongly advocate for the family to help ensure they are treated fairly and receive proper compensation.”
