Khaleel Carey accused in deadly pedestrian crash in Broward County

OAKLAND PARK, FL, (April 08, 2026) — A 22-year-old North Lauderdale man is facing multiple charges following a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred shortly after midnight Wednesday in Oakland Park.

According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Khaleel Ky Won Carey is charged with failure to stop at the scene of a crash involving death and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. Authorities allege that Carey was driving a vehicle that struck a pedestrian at approximately 12:20 a.m. near West Prospect Road and Northwest 9th Avenue.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.

FATAL PEDESTRIAN HIT-AND-RUN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

According to authorities, a witness reported seeing a black sedan traveling slowly on Northwest 9th Avenue with a damaged front headlight before being flagged down by a man requesting help after a pedestrian was struck. Surveillance footage later showed a black sedan leaving the crash scene with visible damage and a missing driver’s side light, while license plate readers identified the vehicle as a 2016 Maxima.

Statistics show that more than one hit-and-run crash occurs every minute across the country. Many drivers flee because they may be intoxicated, unlicensed, or fear arrest if they remain at the scene.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, stated that in cases like this, it is critical to have an independent investigation conducted promptly to protect the rights of a victim’s family.

“Having the proper resources is essential when investigating a hit-and-run case and establishing negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Factors such as road conditions, visibility of signage, and lighting must be carefully reviewed. These steps are necessary to help families pursue justice and financial compensation. An attorney can also ensure that those responsible are held accountable.”

Approximately 2,000 people are killed each year in hit-and-run crashes in the United States. Since 2009, such fatalities have increased by about 7% annually.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of the pedestrian may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim for damages including medical expenses, funeral costs, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.

“A wrongful death occurs when a person or entity’s negligent or wrongful actions result in someone’s death,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “When fatal crashes involve reckless driving, distraction, speeding, hit-and-run behavior, or impairment, families are often left with the option to pursue a civil lawsuit against the responsible party.”
