JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — Multiple people were injured when a wrong-way driver struck another car head-on Saturday night on Interstate 40.
The crash occurred at around 11:15 p.m. near milepost 315. A 40-year-old woman driving a blue 2018 Toyota Camry was traveling east in the westbound lanes. She sideswiped a pickup truck, lost control and hit a 2006 white Buick Lacrosse head-on.
Keyona Davis, 20, was a passenger in the Buick. She was critically injured and remains in the ICU at WakeMed in Raleigh. The Buick’s driver, a 23-year-old man, suffered minor injuries. The pickup truck driver was not injured.
The Camry driver was also transported to WakeMed. She will be charged with wrong way driving and careless and reckless driving.
The highway patrol said everyone was wearing seatbelts. It remains unclear why the driver was traveling in the wrong direction and the crash is being investigated.
