Keyona Davis critically injured in Johnston County wrong-way accident

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — Multiple people were injured when a wrong-way driver struck another car head-on Saturday night on Interstate 40.

The crash occurred at around 11:15 p.m. near milepost 315. A 40-year-old woman driving a blue 2018 Toyota Camry was traveling east in the westbound lanes. She sideswiped a pickup truck, lost control and hit a 2006 white Buick Lacrosse head-on.

Keyona Davis, 20, was a passenger in the Buick. She was critically injured and remains in the ICU at WakeMed in Raleigh. The Buick’s driver, a 23-year-old man, suffered minor injuries. The pickup truck driver was not injured.

The Camry driver was also transported to WakeMed. She will be charged with wrong way driving and careless and reckless driving.

The highway patrol said everyone was wearing seatbelts. It remains unclear why the driver was traveling in the wrong direction and the crash is being investigated.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Wrong-way driving represents a significant safety hazard on American roadways, with approximately 3.7% of fatal crashes on divided highways attributed to wrong-way driving.

While different agencies report varying figures, the scope of the problem is consistently alarming. According to the Federal Highway Administration, about 500 people die each year in the United States in wrong-way crashes, while a study conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board estimates that an average of 350 people die every year because of a wrong way driving accident in the U.S.

These statistics highlight the deadly nature of wrong-way incidents, which typically involve head-on collisions and result in severe or fatal injuries for those involved.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and require thorough examination,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together what happened. All of these resources are necessary for helping clients receive monetary compensation for damages or a loss following a collision,” said Bond.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Keyona Davis may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim pending an investigation.

Bond said, “Injured victims involved in a collision often seek a personal injury claim to cover the cost of medical bills, future medical care, loss of income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.

“Insurance companies can be notoriously unconcerned with the mounting costs that an injured party may accrue. An attorney can help. We protect the victims of these tragedies daily, forcing the insurance companies to pay for their mistakes,” she added.
