Motorists are required to yield to pedestrians in most situations, yet U.S. roadways continue to pose serious risks for people on foot.

According to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), there were 3,304 pedestrian fatalities in the first half of 2024, marking a 2.6% decrease from 2023, but still a 48% increase since 2014.

“In most instances, pedestrians have the right of way when crossing an intersection or street, whether or not they are in a marked crosswalk,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.
