THP: Kennith, Catherine Tanner die in Morgan motorcycle collision

MORGAN, TN, (April 23, 2026) – Two people were killed Thursday afternoon in a collision between a passenger vehicle and a motorcycle in Morgan County, authorities said.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. when a Jeep attempted to turn onto Highway 27 from Coal Hill Road and failed to yield to a northbound motorcycle.

The motorcycle was carrying 59-year-old Kennith Tanner and 60-year-old Catherine Tanner. Both sustained fatal injuries in the collision.

Officials said charges are pending against the driver of the Jeep as the investigation continues.

MOTORCYCLE CRASH INVESTIGATION

This crash highlights the significant risks motorcyclists face on roadways each day. When one driver has the right-of-way, other motorists are required to yield to ensure safe passage through intersections.

More than 6,300 motorcyclists were killed on U.S. roads in 2023, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data, representing 15% of all fatal crashes that year.

“Motorcycle riders are among the most vulnerable road users due to the lack of structural protection such as airbags or reinforced frames,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“Blind spots, inexperienced drivers, and distracted driving frequently contribute to these types of crashes. In many cases, accident reconstruction specialists and even motorcycle manufacturing experts are needed to determine exactly what occurred,” Bond added.

“All of these tools are critical in helping clients pursue compensation following a crash. An attorney can bring in expert witnesses, examine driver histories, identify witnesses, and review insurance coverage,” said Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Kennith and Catherine Tanner may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families who lose loved ones in such incidents may seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and pain and suffering.

“The emotional toll after losing a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face, and protecting their legal rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will remain informed about the investigation and work to ensure that families’ best interests are represented.”

“An attorney can also stand up to large insurance companies and their legal teams while thoroughly reviewing the facts of the crash. Legal representation helps ensure that families receive fair treatment and justice,” he added.
