CHARLOTTE, NC, (May 10, 2026) — A 22-year-old former Queens University student-athlete died Sunday following a single-vehicle crash in Charlotte, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Police said the collision occurred at approximately 2:15 a.m. on Queens Road W when a BMW sedan left the roadway and crashed into a tree.
The impact caused significant damage to the vehicle, requiring emergency crews to extricate the occupants from the wreckage.
One of the passengers, identified as Keegan McKenney, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
McKenney was a former standout swimmer from Cape Elizabeth who had been attending university in Charlotte at the time of the incident.
Authorities said additional occupants inside the BMW were also hospitalized, though their conditions have not been released.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
