Kayla Meyer injured in Salem high-speed hit-and-run collision; suspect held

SALEM, OR, (March 28, 2026) – A hit-and-run crash early Saturday morning in Salem left a woman injured and a man dead, according to the Salem Police Department.

Authorities said Kayla Meyer, 31, was a passenger in a gray Ford Mustang traveling on Lancaster Drive NE at about 3:28 a.m. when the vehicle was struck by a white Mercedes-Benz SUV. Witnesses reported that the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash.

Meyer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the Mustang was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Mercedes fled the scene but was later located nearby. He was taken to Salem Hospital before being arrested and booked into the Marion County Jail. The investigation remains ongoing.

HIT-AND-RUN INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Leaving the scene of an accident is a crime, and statistics show that about 11 percent of all crashes involve a hit-and-run driver. In many situations, at-fault drivers attempt to avoid responsibility by fleeing, but they can still face serious charges once identified.

Attorney Candice Bond emphasized the importance of a timely and independent investigation to safeguard a victim’s rights. “Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a hit-and-run accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that must be fully considered. These steps are necessary to help someone injured in a hit-and-run receive justice and the financial compensation they deserve.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending an investigation, Kayla Meyer may have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, noted that the stress following an injury can be overwhelming, affecting all areas of life, including family, work, finances, and overall well-being.

“It is important for victims to retain an attorney when filing a personal injury claim, as this allows proper negotiation with insurance companies on their behalf,” Formica said.

“Insurance companies often attempt to push victims into quick settlements for far less than a claim may be worth. An attorney will strongly advocate for their clients to ensure they are treated fairly and receive appropriate compensation.”
