CHP: Katrina Clarke died in head-on Napa accident

NAPA, CA (March 28, 2026) – Katrina Clarke, 65, of Sacramento, died following a multi-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon in Napa County involving a suspected impaired driver.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on Silverado Trail near Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, east of Yountville. A Mitsubishi sedan traveling southbound veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a BMW SUV before striking a Toyota sedan head-on.

Clarke, a passenger in the Toyota, was transported to Kaiser Vacaville Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Two passengers in the Mitsubishi, both from American Canyon, were also killed in the crash. Several other individuals, including the Toyota driver, were taken to medical facilities for treatment.

The Mitsubishi driver, a 68-year-old man from Vallejo, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Even when a driver believes they are not impaired, drugs or alcohol can significantly affect coordination and reaction time, increasing the likelihood of serious or fatal crashes. Over a 10-year period from 2012 to 2021, approximately 10,850 people died annually in drunk-driving accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

An independent investigation is often necessary to identify additional contributing factors, including the results of tests used to determine blood-alcohol concentration levels.

“Drunken and drug-impaired drivers may face criminal charges when their actions result in injury or death,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. “In addition to criminal proceedings, the family of a victim may also pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party.”

“Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide victims and their families during this difficult time, protect their legal rights, and ensure that impaired drivers are held accountable,” added Bond, an experienced DUI accident attorney.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family members of Katrina Clarke may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim for damages including medical expenses, funeral costs, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.

“A wrongful death occurs when a negligent or wrongful act leads to the loss of life,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“In cases involving unsafe driving behaviors such as impairment, speeding, or distraction, families are often able to pursue a civil action against the responsible driver to seek justice and compensation.”
