BAY CITY, Mich. — A Saginaw woman faces felony charges after police say she struck a pedestrian while driving under the influence in Bay City’s South End.
Katie L. Beaudin, 32, was arrested following the crash that occurred around 10 p.m. on June 1 at the intersection of Broadway Avenue and 29th Street. Police arrived to find firefighters treating a 36-year-old woman who was lying against the curb on the west side of Broadway.
The victim had been walking across Broadway with a man and her 4-year-old son, who was riding a scooter. According to witnesses, the child rode his scooter in front of Beaudin’s silver 2020 Jeep Wrangler. The boy’s mother chased after him into the crosswalk when the Jeep struck her.
The man who was with them had already crossed the street. He told police he heard the woman screaming behind him after the collision occurred.
Beaudin told police she saw the child cross on his scooter but didn’t see the woman pursuing him. She estimated she was traveling about 40 mph when the crash happened. The impact dislodged the Jeep’s front fender.
Beaudin admitted she had been drinking as recently as 30 minutes before the crash. She told officers she had consumed two 12-ounce cans of beer and four to five shots. Officers administered a preliminary breathalyzer test to Beaudin. The results showed her blood-alcohol level was 0.088, which exceeds Michigan’s legal limit of 0.08.
Police arrested Beaudin at the scene. She agreed to provide blood samples for analysis at the Michigan State Police Crime Lab.
The injured woman was transported to McLaren Bay Region Hospital for treatment. She suffered multiple fractures, dislocation of both knees and torn ligaments in her right leg.
