Kaneohe crash kills woman on Likelike Hwy, HPD says

KANEOHE, HI, (April 22, 2026) – A 20-year-old woman has died following an early Wednesday morning crash on Likelike Highway in Kaneohe, according to the Honolulu Police Department.

Officials said a vehicle traveling northbound struck a guardrail near the Wilson Tunnel at approximately 12:40 a.m.

A backseat passenger was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and sustained critical injuries. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

A front-seat passenger was also hospitalized with serious injuries.

Authorities said the crash remains under active investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding remains the leading cause of fatal crashes, followed by impairment from alcohol, drugs, or medication, failure to maintain lane position, failure to yield, and distracted driving.

The NHTSA estimates that 39,345 people died in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024, including 102 fatalities in Hawaii, reflecting an increase of approximately 9.7 percent from the previous year.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors that must be evaluated,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“It is critical to determine the exact cause of these incidents. An attorney has access to resources such as insurance review, expert witnesses, background investigations, and witness identification. We guide families through every step of the process.”

Bond also noted that accident reconstruction specialists are often required to determine how a crash occurred, helping families pursue compensation for their losses.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of the victim may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims in such tragedies may seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional distress, pain and suffering, and other losses.

“The grief following an unexpected loss can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand what families endure, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will monitor the investigation closely and ensure their legal interests are safeguarded.”

Formica added that attorneys can also protect families from large insurance companies and advocate aggressively on their behalf.

Additionally, injured victims may also pursue personal injury claims. “Victims often seek compensation for medical expenses, future care, lost wages, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering,” Formica said.
