STATEN ISLAND, NY (July 08, 2026) — A 76-year-old Staten Island man lost his life Wednesday morning after being struck by an SUV while crossing a roadway in the borough’s Great Kills neighborhood, according to the New York Police Department.
Police said Junxiong Zhu, of Presley Street, was crossing Hylan Boulevard from west to east within the marked crosswalk at the intersection with Nelson Avenue at approximately 7:53 a.m. when he was hit by a southbound 2025 GMC Terrain.
Emergency responders transported Zhu to Staten Island University Hospital North Campus, where he later died from the injuries he sustained in the collision.
Authorities said the driver of the GMC, a 40-year-old woman, remained at the scene following the crash and cooperated with investigators.
The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. Police noted that Zhu’s death marks at least the fifth fatal pedestrian crash on Staten Island in 2026.
