Junxiong Zhu killed in Staten Island crosswalk crash, NYPD says

STATEN ISLAND, NY (July 08, 2026) — A 76-year-old Staten Island man lost his life Wednesday morning after being struck by an SUV while crossing a roadway in the borough’s Great Kills neighborhood, according to the New York Police Department.

Police said Junxiong Zhu, of Presley Street, was crossing Hylan Boulevard from west to east within the marked crosswalk at the intersection with Nelson Avenue at approximately 7:53 a.m. when he was hit by a southbound 2025 GMC Terrain.

Emergency responders transported Zhu to Staten Island University Hospital North Campus, where he later died from the injuries he sustained in the collision.

Authorities said the driver of the GMC, a 40-year-old woman, remained at the scene following the crash and cooperated with investigators.

The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. Police noted that Zhu’s death marks at least the fifth fatal pedestrian crash on Staten Island in 2026.

FATAL PEDESTRIAN CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The fatal collision remains under investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.

Drivers are required to yield to pedestrians crossing in marked crosswalks and at unmarked crosswalks located at intersections. Using headlights appropriately when conditions allow can improve visibility and help motorists detect pedestrians near or on the roadway.

Pedestrian deaths continue to be a significant traffic safety issue across New York City. According to police, Zhu’s death is at least the fifth fatal pedestrian crash reported on Staten Island in 2026.

Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney, said that in cases like this, an independent investigation conducted by a qualified attorney can play a critical role in preserving evidence and protecting the interests of the victim’s family.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and the national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and must thoroughly be examined. These procedures are necessary for helping those who have lost a loved one receive the justice that they deserve,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Junxiong Zhu may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members may be eligible to recover damages for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, pain and suffering, and other losses resulting from this fatal incident.

“We understand that losing a loved one is not only a deeply emotional loss but also an economic one,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal. “If you have lost a loved one due to someone else’s negligence, contact a wrongful death attorney and get the guidance needed to obtain the justice you deserve.”

Formica also noted, “Families coping with the loss of a loved one are often overwhelmed by the legal procedures designed to protect their rights. An experienced attorney can provide compassionate guidance throughout the process and help ensure they receive the restitution they deserve.”

“Insurance companies often try to pressure victims to settle for a quick payout for far less than the case is worth,” Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, added. “They are financially motivated to limit compensation and do not factor in the long-term consequences and suffering those victims will ultimately experience. Attorneys vigorously advocate for their clients to ensure they are treated respectfully and compensated fairly.”
