Julie Steed paralyzed in Lafayette DWI scooter crash, police say

LAFAYETTE, LA (March 4, 2026) — Julie Steed, 24, was hospitalized with critical injuries Wednesday night after a DWI crash in Lafayette, authorities said.

The Lafayette Police Department reported that Steed was riding an electric scooter southbound on West Pinhook Road near the Vermilion River when a vehicle driven by 36-year-old Dakota Wagoner, also traveling southbound, struck her. The impact threw Steed into the roadway, where she was then hit by a second vehicle that fled the scene.

Steed was transported to Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center. Officials said the injuries ultimately left her permanently paralyzed. Wagoner was arrested and charged with vehicular negligent injuring and operating while intoxicated. His blood-alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit.

Steed’s family described the incident as devastating and has set up a GoFundMe to support her medical recovery.

DWI CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The crash remains under investigation. Despite ongoing efforts nationwide, impaired drivers continue to endanger innocent road users.

Liability in this crash appears clear, as Wagoner was driving under the influence, one of the most dangerous forms of reckless driving. Alcohol consumption greatly impairs a driver’s ability to safely operate a vehicle and should be considered a serious factor in any investigation.

This accident highlights the dangers of drunk driving,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Ten percent of all fatal automobile accidents in the U.S. are caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medications, according to the National Safety Council.

Beyond criminal charges, a victim’s family may be entitled to pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit. An attorney can re-interview witnesses, review surveillance video, and obtain phone and text records of the liable party. Serving as an advocate, a lawyer can guide the family through the legal process while ensuring the intoxicated driver is held accountable,” Bond added, according to Accident Injury News.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Julie Steed may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim to cover medical bills, future care, lost income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.

Anyone harmed by a DUI driver, regardless of the criminal outcome, can pursue additional compensation,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal. “This includes medical expenses, wage loss, and emotional distress.

In certain cases, victims may also file for punitive damages through a civil lawsuit to set an example and deter future reckless driving,” Formica added.
