LAFAYETTE, LA (March 4, 2026) — Julie Steed, 24, was hospitalized with critical injuries Wednesday night after a DWI crash in Lafayette, authorities said.
The Lafayette Police Department reported that Steed was riding an electric scooter southbound on West Pinhook Road near the Vermilion River when a vehicle driven by 36-year-old Dakota Wagoner, also traveling southbound, struck her. The impact threw Steed into the roadway, where she was then hit by a second vehicle that fled the scene.
Steed was transported to Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center. Officials said the injuries ultimately left her permanently paralyzed. Wagoner was arrested and charged with vehicular negligent injuring and operating while intoxicated. His blood-alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit.
Steed’s family described the incident as devastating and has set up a GoFundMe to support her medical recovery.
