Juan Viveros Hurt in Wasco Wrong-Way I-84 Crash, OSP Says

WASCO, Ore. (July 7, 2026) — A suspected drunk driver traveling the wrong way caused a multi-vehicle crash that left three people injured, one seriously, on July 7 in Wasco County, according to Oregon State Police.

The DUI suspect, a 22-year-old man from The Dalles, faces multiple charges, including driving under the influence of intoxicants.

OSP troopers said a 2023 Toyota Camry driven by the 22-year-old man was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes on Interstate 84 near milepost 83 when it struck a 2011 Nissan Altima head-on. As a result of the crash, one of the vehicles became airborne and struck a 2022 Peterbilt semi-truck, damaging the trailer. Juan Viveros, 46, of Yakima, Washington, who was driving the Nissan Altima, suffered serious injuries. He was airlifted to a Portland-area hospital for treatment.

A passenger in the Toyota Camry and the semi-truck driver were also injured in the crash.

This is an ongoing investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

As more vehicles enter the nation’s roadways, crash risks continue to rise. Experts say most of these collisions stem from unsafe driving behaviors such as speeding, impairment, or inattention. An estimated 2.44 million people were injured in roadway crashes in 2023, a 2.5% increase from 2.38 million in 2022, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

While the cause and liability of the crash remain under investigation, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner at Bond Legal, said that it’s imperative to have a seasoned attorney conduct an independent investigation.

“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from the scene of the crash, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide an injured victim during this difficult time while vigorously protecting their legal rights and best interests.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the investigation results, Juan Viveros may have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, noted that the stress and worry following a serious injury can be overwhelming, disrupting all aspects of life, including family, work, finances, and overall quality of life.

“It is vital for victims to hire an attorney when filing a personal injury claim, which allows them to negotiate with an insurance company on behalf of a client,” Formica added.

“Insurance companies often try to pressure victims to settle for a quick payout for far less than the case is worth. However, an attorney will vigorously advocate for their client to ensure that they are treated with respect and compensated fairly.”
