Juan Villagomez killed in Illinois hit-and-run crash, driver charged

BRIDGEVIEW, IL (March 29, 2026) – Juan Villagomez, 56, was killed early Sunday morning in a hit-and-run crash while crossing a roadway in Bridgeview, police said.

According to preliminary reports, Villagomez was crossing South Harlem Avenue in the 7100 block near The Krash Bar at approximately 1:35 a.m. when he was struck by a red Chevrolet Impala traveling southbound in the median lane.

Villagomez, a Chicago resident, was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he later died from his injuries.

Authorities said the driver continued southbound after the collision. The motorist, identified as a Cicero resident, later admitted involvement in the crash.

She has since been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

The incident remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Despite repeated warnings and tragic outcomes, some drivers still flee after striking someone. Leaving the scene of a collision can lead to serious criminal charges, and victims or their families may pursue legal action against the driver. In 2023, hit-and-run crashes resulted in 2,872 deaths, according to NHTSA data. Of 7,314 pedestrian fatalities, 1,818 (25%) involved hit-and-runs, with 75% occurring in urban areas. These incidents, which have risen 32% since 2019, highlight the urgent need for accountability.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a hit-and-run case and prove negligence,” said Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“Factors such as road conditions, visibility of signage, and lighting must all be carefully reviewed as part of the investigation. These steps are essential in helping families seek justice after a tragic loss.”

Added Bond, the national analyst for Accident Injury News, “The driver always has to take great care behind the wheel.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Juan Villagomez may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Loved ones of wrongful death victims may pursue compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a devastating accident like this.

“The emotional toll after losing a loved one in such an incident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face, and protecting their legal rights is crucial. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation and help ensure that the family’s best interests are fully represented.”
