Joya Hill died in Clayton accident; Hyundai failed to yield: OSHP

CLAYTON, OH, (April 17, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash Friday afternoon in Clayton claimed the life of a Trotwood woman and left three others injured, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Authorities said the collision occurred around 3:48 p.m. at the intersection of Hoke Road and Westbrook Road. A 2023 Hyundai Elantra traveling south reportedly failed to yield to cross traffic and was struck by a westbound 2013 Chevrolet Silverado.

A passenger in the Hyundai, 79-year-old Joya Hill, sustained critical injuries and was transported to Miami Valley Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The driver of the Hyundai suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was also taken to the hospital. The driver and a passenger in the Silverado sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were hospitalized for evaluation.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Ohio recorded 1,076 fatal crashes and 1,156 fatalities in 2024, a 6.9% drop from 2023 and the third straight year of declining traffic deaths. However, despite this progress, traffic fatalities in Ohio increased 26% between 2013 and 2023, highlighting ongoing long-term roadway safety concerns.

The most common contributing factors include speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all potential contributing factors that need to be carefully evaluated,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“In some cases, an accident reconstruction team is required to determine exactly what occurred. These resources are essential in helping victims or their families pursue compensation for losses following a crash,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Joya Hill may have the option to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress after a tragic accident.

“The emotional and financial impact after losing a loved one in a crash can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face, and protecting their legal rights is crucial. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the official investigation and help ensure that the family’s best interests are represented,” Formica added.
