Jovanna Saily Reyes killed in Haines City FL semi truck accident

HAINES CITY, FL (April 17, 2026) – A 24-year-old woman, Jovanna Saily Reyes, was killed in a crash involving a semi-truck early Friday morning just outside Haines City.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Reyes was driving a Hyundai Sonata shortly before 12:30 a.m. when her vehicle collided with the trailer of a Volvo semi-truck that was making a U-turn to head north on U.S. Route 27.

Authorities said the Hyundai traveled underneath the truck, crossed the median, left the roadway, and struck a fence before crashing into a wall at the First Apostolic Pentecostal Church on B Moore Road.

Reyes was pronounced dead at the scene.

The semi-truck driver, a 24-year-old woman from Tampa, was not injured.

FATAL SEMI-TRUCK ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

A variety of factors can contribute to crashes involving large trucks, including loss of vehicle control, mechanical failures, and driver fatigue.

Candice Bond, an experienced tractor-trailer accident attorney, emphasized that independent investigations are critical in these cases to safeguard victims’ families.

“Crashes involving large trucks are often complicated, with multiple contributing factors,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “An experienced attorney can protect families from trucking companies, which often deploy their own investigators and resources. Legal teams can retain experts, review driver histories, locate witnesses, and assess insurance coverage while guiding families through the process.”

In 2021, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 5,788 fatalities in crashes involving large trucks, a 17% increase from 2020. Of those killed, 72% were occupants of other vehicles.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Jovanna Saily Reyes may have the right to file a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members can pursue compensation for loss of companionship, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.

“The emotional toll after losing a loved one in a crash can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “Families need strong legal support to ensure their rights are protected. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation and help secure the best possible outcome.”
