Josephine Lee and Jakrya Burns injured in Saline County hit-and-run accident

RURAL SALINE, Ark. — A rear-end hit-and-run crash on June 17 along Interstate 530 forced a vehicle off the roadway, resulting in one death and three injuries.

The impact occurred around 3:32 p.m. near milepost 10 under rainy conditions.

Josephine Lee, 37, of Pine Bluff was driving a 2022 Hyundai Elantra southbound with three passengers when an unknown vehicle struck them from behind. The impact caused the Elantra to veer off the roadway and hit a tree.

Jakrya Burns, 18, and a minor, both also from Pine Bluff, were riding with Lee. All three suffered unspecified injuries in the crash. A 19-year-old passenger, seated in the rear, was ejected and died at the scene.

Arkansas State Police said the vehicle that fled has not been identified. Troopers continue to search for the suspect.

ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

The number of Arkansas hit-and-run accidents seems to be increasing, though specific statistics were not available. Arkansas law imposes severe penalties for leaving the scene of an accident, with fines ranging up to $10,000 and a maximum of six years in prison along with the cancellation of a driver’s license.

The Arkansas Highway Safety Office coordinates statewide behavioral highway safety programs but does not maintain separate hit-and-run statistics in their publicly available reports.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, said in cases such as this it is imperative to have an independent investigation conducted by a seasoned attorney promptly to protect a victim’s rights.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a hit-and-run accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, a Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and must thoroughly be examined. These procedures are necessary for helping someone who has lost a loved one at the hands of a hit-and-run driver receive the justice and monetary compensation that they deserve.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

A victim may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim, pending the investigation.

Bond added, “Injured victims involved in a collision often seek a personal injury claim to cover the cost of medical bills, future medical care, loss of income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.

“Insurance companies can be notoriously unconcerned with the mounting costs that an injured party may accrue. That’s where an attorney can help. We protect the victims of these tragedies daily, forcing the insurance companies to pay for their mistakes,” she said.
