Coroner: Joseph Alfaro dies in Boulder County pedestrian accident

LONGMONT, CO, January 01, 2026 — A pedestrian was killed in a traffic collision on New Year’s Day in Boulder County, according to authorities.

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office said 39-year-old Joseph Alfaro was crossing Main Street in Longmont from east to west at approximately 8:50 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle.

Alfaro, a Longmont resident, was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

When vehicles and pedestrians collide, pedestrians typically suffer the most severe consequences regardless of fault. While all road users are expected to follow traffic laws, drivers carry a heightened responsibility to remain alert and operate their vehicles safely.

Data from the Governors Highway Safety Association shows that between 2010 and 2020, pedestrian traffic fatalities increased by 54%, compared to a 13% increase in all other traffic deaths.

“Proper investigative resources are essential in pedestrian accident cases to help establish negligence,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

Bond added that an attorney will evaluate contributing factors, retain expert witnesses, locate eyewitnesses, and analyze applicable insurance coverage. She made the remarks in her role as a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Factors such as roadway conditions, signage visibility, and lighting are closely reviewed and must be thoroughly examined. These steps are critical in helping families seek justice after losing a loved one,” Bond said.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

As the investigation continues, the family of Joseph Alfaro may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. In these cases, surviving relatives may seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering following a fatal accident.

“The emotional burden after the loss of a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal.

Formica explained that wrongful death attorneys assist families by monitoring the investigation and working to ensure that their legal rights and best interests remain protected throughout the process.
