New York State is experiencing a dangerous surge in drunken driving fatalities, with deaths from alcohol-related traffic crashes climbing nearly 30% in recent years according to state police.

The state recorded more than 7,000 alcohol-related traffic crashes in 2022, resulting in 335 deaths—a stark increase from the 262 fatalities reported in 2019. This troubling upward trend means that slightly more than 30% of all fatal crashes in New York State now involve alcohol.

“Drunken and drugged drivers are subject to criminal charges following an accident or collision that causes harm or kills another person,’’ explained Candice Bond, a Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

She added, “Separate from criminal charges, the family of a victim may be entitled to compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party.”

The National Safety Council reports that impaired driving—whether due to alcohol, drugs, or other medications—accounts for 10 percent of all fatal automobile accidents. These crashes rank as the second-leading cause of traffic fatalities in the country.
