Police: Jonathan Wenzel Dies After Vehicle Falls onto Interstate 55

A fatal multi-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning forced the closure of a section of northbound Interstate 55 in Romeoville, authorities said.

Police identified the victim as Jonathan Wenzel, 20. Investigators said Wenzel’s vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it left Frontage Road, crashed through a sound wall, and fell onto Interstate 55 near the Route 126 exit.

According to police, the vehicle was then struck by another northbound motorist. The Plainfield Fire Protection District conducted an extrication to reach a trapped individual, who was transported to a hospital in critical but stable condition.

Two additional people were evaluated at the scene and declined further medical treatment. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Motor vehicle crashes in the United States claim approximately 36,000 lives each year and leave another 1.9 million people injured. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was the leading cause of fatal crashes in 2018, followed by impairment from alcohol, drugs, or medication; failure to maintain proper lanes; failure to yield; and distracted driving.

“Factors such as roadway conditions, lighting, and visibility are all carefully reviewed when determining how a crash occurred,” said Candice Bond, an experienced attorney and Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“In some cases, an accident reconstruction team may be necessary to fully understand the sequence of events. These investigative tools are essential to help clients pursue compensation for losses or damages resulting from a collision,” Bond added.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Depending on the findings of the investigation, an injured party may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim.

“Injured victims involved in serious crashes often pursue personal injury claims to help cover medical expenses, future treatment, lost wages, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“Insurance companies are often reluctant to address the full scope of an injured person’s losses. Legal representation can help ensure victims’ rights are protected and that insurers are held accountable for their obligations,” he added.
