Jonathan Morales Pabon Dies in 2-Vehicle Collision in Haines City

Haines City, FL — June 9, 2026 — An off-duty Polk County Sheriff’s Office detention deputy was fatally injured Tuesday night in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 4 in Haines City, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Jonathan Morales Pabon, 32, was riding as a passenger in a Nissan Rogue operated by a 21-year-old Lake Wales woman traveling eastbound on Interstate 4 at approximately 10:30 p.m. Authorities say the driver suddenly braked and cut across several lanes of traffic in a rapid attempt to exit the interstate. The abrupt maneuver caused the Nissan to collide with a Ford F-350 that was also traveling eastbound in the far right lane.

Pabon sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead. The driver of the Nissan Rogue sustained minor injuries, and the driver of the Ford F-350 was uninjured.

A New York native, Pabon served with the Florida Department of Corrections from 2018 to 2021 before being hired as a detention deputy with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office in 2021. He was assigned to the South County Jail in Frostproof at the time of his death.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd paid tribute to the fallen deputy in a public statement. “We are all grieving at the loss of this great young deputy who has well and faithfully served with our agency for the past five years and was a public servant for several years prior to that,” Judd wrote. “He will be greatly missed. Please keep his family in your prayers.”

FATAL TWO-VEHICLE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Authorities continue to investigate the fatal collision as the Pabon family and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office community grieve the loss of a dedicated public servant.

Each year, approximately 36,000 people lose their lives in motor vehicle accidents across the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding is the leading cause of fatal crashes, followed by the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication; failure to stay in the proper lane; failure to yield the right of way; and distracted driving.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, stressed that in cases of this nature, an independent investigation conducted by an experienced attorney is essential to properly represent victims and their families in negotiations with insurance companies.

Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News, emphasized that while no amount of money can compensate for the tragic loss of a loved one, victims and their families must be properly and fully represented throughout the process.

“Insurance companies often try to pressure victims and families of victims to settle for a quick payout for far less than the case is worth,” Bond said. “They are financially motivated to limit compensation and do not factor in the long-term consequences and suffering that a family will ultimately experience. Attorneys vigorously advocate for their clients to ensure that they are treated with respect and compensated fairly.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Based on the available information, the family of Jonathan Morales Pabon may have legal grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim seeking damages for funeral costs, loss of love and companionship, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.
“A wrongful death claim is a civil action for financial damages brought by the estate or relatives of the deceased,” said Bond. “A civil case is very different from a criminal case in a number of ways and is its own separate action.”
“The passenger may also open a claim with the insurance company of the vehicle they were occupied in if their driver is held liable,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. “The option has no impact on one’s own insurance policy since the claim is being made against an insurance policy that is not their own.”
Families navigating the aftermath of a fatal crash involving a loved one are strongly encouraged to consult with a qualified wrongful death attorney at the earliest opportunity to ensure their rights are fully protected and that any compensation pursued reflects the full scope of their loss.
