In 2024, Illinois recorded 219 fatal pedestrian-involved crashes, up from 200 the previous year—a 9.5% increase. The six-county region around Chicago (including Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will) saw 144 pedestrian deaths, a 6.7% rise from 2023.

Many of these incidents involve hit-and-run drivers. While exact statewide hit-and-run figures are not always broken out separately, law enforcement agencies continue to cite speeding, distracted driving, and larger vehicles like SUVs as key contributors to the severity of pedestrian injuries and fatalities.
