JOPLIN, MO, (June 25, 2026) – An 86-year-old retired judge was killed in a pedestrian accident last Thursday night in Joplin.
According to police, Jolly Walter Matthews III was attempting to cross South Range Line Road near 32nd Street just before 9 p.m. when he was struck by a dune-buggy style vehicle and two other vehicles.
Matthews, who was in town with friends for a hunting trip, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Matthews, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, was a retired lieutenant colonel in the United States Navy and had practiced law for five decades.
Joplin police have not released additional information regarding the drivers involved, and the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
