OSHP: Jolayne Blake struck in Ross County pedestrian collision

ROSS, OH, (May 17, 2026) – A Chillicothe woman was killed Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle along U.S. 35 in Ross County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Troopers responded to the scene at approximately 8:27 a.m. after receiving reports of a pedestrian near the roadside close to milepost 3. Preliminary findings indicate that a sedan traveling northwest struck 45-year-old Jolayne C. Blake as she was walking along the traffic lanes.

Blake sustained fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the driver of the sedan was not injured and remained at the scene while cooperating fully with investigators.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal pedestrian crash.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Every year, many pedestrians lose their lives on roadways across the United States. According to a report from the Governors Highway Safety Association, approximately 3,304 pedestrians were struck and killed by drivers during the first half of 2024.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important when investigating a pedestrian accident case and establishing negligence,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

“Roadway conditions, lighting visibility, and traffic signage are all potential contributing factors that must be carefully evaluated during an investigation. These steps are essential in helping families who have lost a loved one pursue the justice they deserve,” Bond added.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes necessary to help determine exactly what happened. These resources are critical in helping clients pursue compensation for damages or losses following a collision,” said Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is generally the responsibility of a driver to yield to pedestrians whenever required by law,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. The family of the victim may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Families of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship and income, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a tragic accident,” Bond said.

Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide grieving families through the legal process while protecting their rights and interests during a difficult time.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure victims and families into accepting quick settlements for far less than a claim may be worth,” Bond noted. “An attorney will fight to ensure clients are treated fairly and receive the compensation they deserve.”
