Johnny Burchfield struck, killed by train in Abilene, police say

ABILENE, TX (June 27, 2026) — A 49-year-old man died after being struck by a Union Pacific train early Saturday morning in Abilene, according to local police.

Authorities said Johnny Burchfield, an Abilene resident, was hit by the train at approximately 2 a.m. in the 1900 block of South First Street near the Sayles Boulevard crossover.

Police said the train’s conductor contacted emergency dispatch to report the collision. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, where Burchfield was pronounced dead.

Officials have not released additional information regarding the circumstances leading up to the fatal incident. The investigation into the pedestrian-train collision remains ongoing.

FATAL TRAIN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Train accidents such as this can occur for a variety of reasons, including train crew error, track defects, mechanical failures, signal operator mistakes, or reckless conduct.

According to the National Transportation Safety Bureau (NTSB), approximately 1,000 people are killed in train-related accidents each year. As part of the investigation, officials will also determine whether the crash location was adequately protected for pedestrian crossing.

Candice Bond, an experienced train accident attorney, said that in cases like this, it is critical for an independent investigation to be conducted by an experienced attorney as soon as possible to help preserve evidence for the victim’s family.

“A skilled attorney can protect a grieving family from powerful train companies, which often dispatch their own investigators to crash scenes and have extensive resources available to defend a negligent party,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending results of the investigation, the family members of Johnny Burchfield may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for the loss of love and companionship, pain, suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident such as this.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We understand the difficult circumstances families face after a tragic loss, and protecting their legal rights is essential. A wrongful death lawyer will stay informed about the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests remain protected,” Formica said.
