John Folan dies in Wheeling pedestrian accident on Frontage Rd

WHEELING, IL, (May 03, 2026) – A 68-year-old Prospect Heights man, identified as John Folan, was tragically killed in a pedestrian accident Sunday morning near Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling.

According to Prospect Heights police, Folan was discovered shortly after 9 a.m. on East Palatine Frontage Road, along the fence line of the airport. Authorities said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary findings indicate that Folan was struck by a vehicle. Officials noted that no witnesses have come forward, and no suspects have been identified at this time. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

FATAL PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Police said there were no known witnesses connected to the crash, and investigators have not identified any suspects so far.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence,” said Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney and a Managing Partner at Bond Legal. “Factors such as road conditions, visibility of signage, and street lighting may all play a role and must be carefully reviewed. These steps are essential in helping families pursue justice after losing a loved one.”

Vulnerable road users like pedestrians continue to face significant risks nationwide. Data from the Governors Highway Safety Association shows pedestrian fatalities have increased at a faster rate than other traffic deaths, with an estimated 6,590 deaths reported in 2019 — the highest in more than three decades.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, there were 303,913 motor vehicle crashes in the state in 2024. Pedestrian-related incidents made up 1.6% of total crashes, but accounted for 19.7% of fatal crashes and 7% of injury crashes.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family of John Folan may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Family members of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral costs, and emotional distress following a tragic accident.”

An attorney can play a vital role in supporting families during this difficult period while safeguarding their legal rights.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure victims into accepting quick settlements that are far less than what a claim may be worth,” Bond added. “An experienced attorney will advocate strongly to ensure clients are treated fairly and receive appropriate compensation.”
