Johanna Gregory Killed in Two-Boat Crash off Chicago Shore, IL

CHICAGO, IL (June 25, 2026) — Johanna Gregory, 26, of Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, was killed Thursday night after two boats collided near Monroe Harbor in downtown Chicago, according to authorities.

Officials said the crash occurred shortly before midnight near the 400 block of Monroe Street. The U.S. Coast Guard was notified of the collision at approximately 11:45 p.m.

Authorities said the accident involved 14 people between the ages of 18 and 26. Preliminary information indicates that the two boats were returning to port when one vessel overtook the other approximately 1.5 miles offshore, resulting in the collision.

Gregory, who was aboard one of the boats, suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

Four other people sustained unspecified injuries and were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

Officials have not released additional details regarding the cause of the collision, and the investigation remains ongoing.

FATAL BOATING ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Boat operators have a responsibility to operate their vessels safely and protect everyone on board. Unfortunately, boating accidents often occur when operators lack experience, overestimate their abilities, or encounter unpredictable conditions on the water. Speeding, operator error, inadequate maintenance, mechanical defects, and insufficient training are among the common causes of these collisions.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, approximately 4,291 recreational boating accidents occur annually in the United States, with alcohol contributing to about 18% of those incidents.

The Coast Guard has also warned that alcohol poses an even greater danger on the water than on land. Motion, vibration, engine noise, sunlight, wind, and water spray can intensify impairment, leading to fatigue and reducing a boat operator’s coordination, judgment, and reaction time.

Candice Bond, an experienced boating accident attorney, discussed the legal considerations in cases involving serious boating crashes.

“Separate from any criminal proceedings, victims or their families may have the right to seek compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “In addition to the efforts of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview witnesses, examine available surveillance footage, and obtain phone and text records from the liable party. Legal counsel can also help guide clients through the process while protecting their rights and working to hold negligent or reckless boat operators accountable.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Johanna Gregory may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for medical and funeral expenses, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“A wrongful death claim may arise when a person’s negligent or wrongful actions result in another individual’s death,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “When fatal accidents are caused by unsafe or reckless operation, distracted behavior, speeding, or impairment, surviving family members may have legal grounds to pursue a civil claim against the responsible party.”
