UNION COUNTY, Ark. — A fatal collision at the intersection of State Highway 7 and Pershing Highway claimed the life of an 81-year-old Smackover man Tuesday morning and sent others to the hospital.
The elderly driver died when his 2007 Pontiac was struck by a 2005 Chevrolet driven by a 22-year-old Camden resident. The accident occurred at 10:55 a.m. under clear skies and dry road conditions.
The 81-year-old man was traveling southbound on Highway 7 with passenger Joey Allen Williams, 39, of Ward. The driver pulled his car onto the shoulder at the Pershing Highway intersection before attempting a left turn across the southbound lane.
The Camden man’s Chevrolet, also traveling south on Highway 7, struck the left side of the victim’s vehicle during the turn.
Emergency personnel pronounced the Smackover man dead at the scene.
Both Williams and the 22-year-old driver sustained injuries in the crash. Medical personnel transported both men to area hospitals for treatment. The extent of their injuries was not immediately clear.
The intersection where the accident occurred serves as a junction between State Highway 7 and Pershing Highway in rural Union County.
