Joann Sutliff killed in Johnsburg Route 8 pedestrian crash

WARREN, NY, (July 04, 2026) – A Johnsburg woman died Saturday night after she was struck by a pickup truck while attempting to cross Route 8, according to the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said Joann Sutliff, 64, stepped into the eastbound lanes of Route 8 near Sodom Cross Road at approximately 11:42 p.m. when she was struck by a 2001 Ford F-450 pickup truck.

Sutliff sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the driver, a 49-year-old man from Mooers Forks, remained at the scene. Investigators reported that he showed no signs of impairment, and no charges have been filed.

The Warren County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Unit and Criminal Investigations Unit continue to investigate the fatal collision.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Every year, many pedestrians lose their lives on roadways across the United States. According to a report from the Governors Highway Safety Association, approximately 3,304 pedestrians were struck and killed by drivers during the first half of 2024.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

“Road conditions, signage visibility, and roadway lighting are all possible contributing factors that should be carefully evaluated. These investigative steps are essential in helping families who have lost a loved one pursue justice,” Bond added.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes necessary to determine exactly how a collision occurred. These resources are critical in helping clients pursue compensation for damages or losses resulting from a crash,” said Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. Pending the outcome of the investigation, the victim’s family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Family members of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident,” Formica said.

Serving as an advocate, an attorney can compassionately guide a family through this difficult time while protecting their legal rights and interests.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure victims into accepting quick settlements that are far below the true value of a claim,” Formica added. “An attorney will work diligently to protect a client’s rights and pursue fair compensation while ensuring they are treated with respect.”
