Jimbo Houston dies after Worth County DUI crash

WORTH, GA (April 01, 2026) – A longtime educator was killed Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle DUI crash in Worth County.

According to the Georgia Highway Patrol, Jim “Jimbo” Houston was driving northbound on Highway 300 near the GA-32 intersection when his Chevrolet pickup truck was struck from behind by a Toyota SUV around 4:30 p.m.

The impact forced Houston’s vehicle off the roadway and into a tree. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Authorities determined that the SUV driver, identified as Michael Corey Mathews, was under the influence at the time of the crash and was charged with misdemeanor DUI.

DUI CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Driving under the influence is entirely preventable and can lead to devastating consequences. DUI crashes often result in severe injuries or fatalities, leaving lasting emotional and financial impacts on victims and their families.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 37 people die daily in alcohol-related crashes, and about 32% of all traffic fatalities involve impaired drivers with a BAC of .08 or higher. In 2019, such incidents accounted for 28% of all traffic deaths.

Candice Bond, an experienced DUI accident attorney, emphasized accountability in these cases.

“Drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs can face serious criminal charges when their actions result in injury or death,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“In addition to law enforcement efforts, an attorney can revisit witness statements, review surveillance footage, and obtain phone records. Acting as an advocate, legal counsel helps guide families through difficult times while ensuring impaired drivers are held responsible,” added Bond, also a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Family members who have lost a loved one may pursue compensation for damages such as funeral costs, loss of income, loss of companionship, and other related hardships.

The family of Jim “Jimbo” Houston may be entitled to file a wrongful death claim to recover damages related to funeral expenses and the loss of love and companionship.

In certain cases, punitive damages may also be pursued to discourage similar reckless behavior in the future and promote community safety.

“It is essential that impaired drivers are held accountable both criminally and financially,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“An attorney can shield families from insurance company tactics while thoroughly reviewing the facts. Legal representation ensures that the family’s rights are protected and that they receive the compensation they deserve,” Formica added.
