Jesus Velasquez cited after Newport child injury crash

NEWPORT, NC, (March 29, 2026) – A 4-year-old girl was seriously injured Sunday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle in Newport, according to local police.

Authorities said Jesus Velasquez, 51, of Newport, was driving on Howard Boulevard near East Forest Drive when his vehicle struck the child near a crosswalk around 1:50 p.m.

The girl sustained traumatic blunt force injuries and was airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center. Officials said her condition is currently stable.

Investigators have not determined whether the child was inside the crosswalk at the time of the collision. Velasquez remained at the scene and was later cited for operating a motor vehicle without a valid license. The investigation is ongoing.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The investigation into the crash is ongoing. During the probe, Newport police will work to determine what led Velasquez to strike and injure the 4-year-old child. Authorities will also examine whether the child was within the crosswalk at the time of the collision.

Pedestrians like the victim face daily risks on roadways across the country, and this incident highlights those dangers.

According to the National Safety Council, 150,000 pedestrians were injured as a result of motor vehicle crashes in 2018.

Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney, explained that collisions like this are often caused by distracted driving, negligent behavior, speeding, or failure to yield.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that must be carefully reviewed. These steps are necessary to help those who have lost a loved one obtain the justice they deserve,” Bond added.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

The victim injured in the accident may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, said, “Injured victims involved in a collision often pursue a personal injury claim to help cover medical expenses, future care, lost income, emotional distress, and pain and suffering.”

“Insurance companies are often unconcerned with the growing costs an injured victim may face. That is where an attorney can help by protecting victims and ensuring insurance companies are held accountable for their actions,” he added.
