Jesus Canales Lopez dies after head-on wreck in Julian CA

JULIAN, CA, (April 04, 2026) – Jesus Canales Lopez, 66, was one of two people killed in a head-on crash Saturday afternoon east of Julian in San Diego County, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Authorities said the collision occurred around 2:50 p.m. on state Route 78 near Mastros Trailer Park Road, where two pickup trucks traveling in opposite directions collided. The impact was severe, requiring extrication of victims. Lopez and another person died from their injuries, while two others were airlifted to a hospital. The crash remains under investigation.
The second victim has been identified as 72-year-old Mark Gerald Vaugh Straass from San Diego.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

A variety of factors contribute to the rise in traffic fatalities, with driver behavior playing a central role—including speeding, impaired driving, and distractions such as cellphone use. Head-on crashes, due to the combined force of impact, are often severe and can result in catastrophic injuries or fatalities. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 39,345 people died in traffic crashes in 2024.

As authorities continue to examine the cause of this crash, Candice Bond, an experienced attorney and Managing Partner at Bond Legal, stressed the importance of conducting an independent investigation.

“In addition to the thorough work of law enforcement, an attorney can revisit key witness statements, review available surveillance footage, and obtain phone and texting records of the responsible party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

Timely action is critical in cases like this, and it is important for the victim’s family to ensure that all evidence is carefully and efficiently reviewed.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family members of Jesus Canales Lopez may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other damages resulting from a tragic accident.

“We recognize that the loss of a loved one brings both emotional and financial hardships,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal.

“If you have lost a loved one due to another party’s negligence, consulting a wrongful death attorney can help you understand your rights and pursue the justice you deserve.”
