Jerry Richards dies in Carlsbad e-bike collision, police report

SAN DIEGO, CA, (July 31, 2026) – An 86-year-old Oceanside man died after sustaining injuries in an e-bike collision at a Carlsbad intersection, according to the Carlsbad Police Department.

Jerry Richards was involved in the collision at Carlsbad Village Drive and Glasgow Drive at approximately 7:49 a.m. on July 31.

Emergency personnel transported Richards to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for treatment following the crash. He died at the hospital later that afternoon.

The cause of death was listed as multiple blunt force injuries.

The Carlsbad Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

E-BICYCLE CRASH INVESTIGATION

Electric bicycles have become increasingly popular across the United States, while e-bike-related injuries and fatalities have also risen. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that e-bike accidents treated in emergency departments increased from approximately 3,500 in 2017 to more than 34,000 in 2023. The American College of Surgeons has characterized e-bike crashes as an emerging public health threat, citing factors such as high speeds and limited protective infrastructure.

Bond, an experienced bicycle accident attorney, said determining the precise cause of an e-bike collision is important and noted that an attorney may have resources to review applicable insurance coverage, retain expert witnesses, conduct background checks and identify witnesses.

Bond also said independent investigations should be conducted promptly to help preserve evidence.

“In addition to a police report, an attorney will carefully review what may have contributed to the crash,” Bond said. Bond added that legal counsel may have resources to retain expert witnesses, conduct background checks, locate crash witnesses and examine applicable insurance coverage.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of a victim could pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.

Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, said the emotional stress and grief following the loss of a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming.

Formica said families may benefit from having their rights protected during the process. He added that a wrongful death lawyer can remain informed about the official investigation and help safeguard the family’s legal rights and best interests.
