LARGO, Fla. — A suspected drunken driving crash sent three people to the hospital Saturday evening at the intersection of 124th Avenue and Seminole Boulevard.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to the collision at 10:07 p.m. An 80-year-old man driving a Toyota RAV4 was believed to be driving under the influence when he attempted to turn onto 124th Street.
The Toyota struck a Kia Soul with two 21-year-olds inside. Jeremy Hieke, 21, of St. Petersburg, was driving the Kia and said he saw the RAV4 stopped at the median with its turn signal on.
Fire crews used the jaws of life to remove Hieke and his fiancée from their vehicle. All three people were transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Medical Center for treatment.
Hieke sustained a broken femur, required stitches in his forehead, and had a rod placed in his leg. His fiancée was treated for bruises throughout her body and a head injury. Both underwent surgery the following day.
The 80-year-old man also suffered injuries. State troopers said a breath test was “impractical and impossible” due to his hospitalization, but he consented to a voluntary blood draw. Results are pending as the investigation continues.
