MADISON COUNTY, Ala.— Authorities are investigating a deadly pedestrian accident on Winchester Road near County Lake Road on April 7.
Investigators identified Jeremy Dempsey, a 39-year-old New Market man, as the victim of the accident. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reported the accident occurred around 1:05 a.m. A vehicle struck Dempsey in the roadway and left the scene.
State troopers later located the driver, an 18-year-old Huntsville man, and arrested him. Authorities charged him with leaving the scene of an accident. He was booked into Madison County Jail but has since been released.

2049 people were killed by hit-and-run crashes in 2016 — a 62 percent increase from 2009, the last year in which a downward trend was recorded. AAA said the data makes 2016 the deadliest year since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began compiling statistics on fatal motor vehicle crashes in 1975.
