Jay’Shawn Godfrey killed in FM 563 traffic collision in Texas

CHAMBERS, TX, (April 07, 2026) – Jay’Shawn Godfrey, 19, was among three teenagers who lost their lives in a tragic single-vehicle incident Tuesday evening on Farm-to-Market Road 563 in Chambers County.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Godfrey was a passenger in a Chrysler 300 driven by a 37-year-old woman. At approximately 7 p.m., the vehicle reportedly left the roadway and struck a tree.

Godfrey and two other passengers, ages 17 and 15, were pronounced dead following the collision. Authorities believe speed may have contributed to the incident.

The case remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

According to the National Safety Council (NSC), speeding contributed to 29% of all traffic fatalities in 2022, resulting in 12,151 deaths.

Excessive speed reduces a driver’s ability to react to hazards, increases stopping distance, and limits the effectiveness of safety systems. Regardless of the conclusions reached by law enforcement, Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, emphasized the importance of an independent investigation to preserve evidence and safeguard the rights of grieving families.

“Beyond the work of police, an attorney can re-examine key witnesses, review surveillance footage, and obtain phone and text records of the responsible party,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Acting as an advocate, an attorney can guide families through this difficult period while ensuring their legal rights and best interests are protected.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of Jay’Shawn Godfrey may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families who lose loved ones in such incidents may seek compensation for emotional distress, loss of companionship, and other damages.

“We understand the challenges families face after such tragic losses, and protecting their rights is essential,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney will monitor the official investigation and help ensure the family’s interests are represented. Loved ones may pursue damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident.”
