Jaymar Garcia Alejo arrested after Delano I-99 wrong-way crash

DELANO, CA – (April 4, 2026) A wrong way crash Saturday night near Highway 99 and Ninth Avenue in the Delano area left one person dead and several others injured, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities said a 2024 Tesla Model X, driven by 28 year old Jaymar Arvin Garcia Alejo of Shafter, was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Highway 99 at approximately 9:17 p.m. when it collided with a southbound Nissan Frontier. A Dodge Charger traveling behind the Nissan then struck the vehicle following the initial impact.

A passenger in the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and another passenger in the Nissan sustained major injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment.

Four occupants of the Dodge suffered minor injuries.

Alejo was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and manslaughter. The crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Drunk driving continues to claim lives on U.S. roads despite increased awareness, strict laws, and sobering statistics. Tragically, these incidents are preventable. In 2023, one person was killed in a drunk-driving crash every 42 minutes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

An independent investigation is often necessary to identify additional contributing factors, including the results of blood-alcohol testing.

“Drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs may face criminal charges when their actions result in injury or death,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. “Beyond criminal cases, families may also pursue compensation through civil claims.”

“An attorney can provide guidance and support during this difficult time, ensuring victims’ rights are protected while holding impaired drivers accountable,” added Bond, an experienced DUI accident attorney.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation results, the family members of the victim killed in the crash may be entitled to a wrongful death claim for medical and funeral expenses, the loss of love and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“A wrongful death occurs when a person or entity’s negligent or wrongful actions result in someone’s death,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“When fatal crashes are caused by reckless behavior such as impaired or distracted driving, surviving family members often have the option to pursue legal action against the responsible party.”
