FHP: Jaykumar Patel Arrested After Fatal Wesley Chapel Crash

WESLEY CHAPEL, FL — June 6, 2026 — A Wesley Chapel man has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run motorcycle crash that left one person dead and another seriously injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers identified the suspect as Jaykumar Chaturbhai Patel, 70, of Wesley Chapel. According to FHP, the incident occurred shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday when Patel was traveling north on Handcart Road and attempted a left turn at Old Bridge Road. His vehicle struck a southbound motorcycle, ejecting both the rider and a passenger.

The motorcyclist, a 31-year-old man from Zephyrhills, was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries and subsequently died from his wounds. A 32-year-old Zephyrhills woman who had been riding as a passenger on the motorcycle was also hospitalized with serious injuries.

Patel allegedly fled the scene following the collision. Troopers later located and arrested him at his residence. He now faces three charges: leaving the scene involving death, leaving the scene involving injuries, and leaving the scene involving property damage.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. No additional information has been released at this time.

FATAL ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Fleeing the scene of a crash is a criminal offense, yet data consistently shows that more than one hit-and-run collision occurs every minute on roads across the United States.

Candice Bond, a highly experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, noted that in circumstances like these, it is absolutely critical to retain a skilled attorney without delay to conduct an independent investigation and safeguard the rights of those affected.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a hit-and-run accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors considered and examined,” Bond added.

These procedures are essential for helping those who have lost a loved one at the hands of a hit-and-run driver obtain the justice and full monetary compensation they rightfully deserve.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of the victim may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this.

“The heartache and emotional burden that come with losing a loved one in an accident can be truly overwhelming and all-consuming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We deeply understand the painful reality that families are forced to endure during these incredibly difficult times, and ensuring that their rights are fully protected is absolutely essential. A wrongful death lawyer will remain closely engaged with the official investigation and work tirelessly to safeguard their legal rights and best interests at every stage.”
