RIO ARRIBA, NM (March 29, 2026) – A commercial truck driver died following a hit-and-run crash Sunday morning on New Mexico Highway 550, authorities said.
Jasper Bunny was identified as the driver of the commercial vehicle involved in the crash near milepost 106. He suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to a hospital, where he later died.
New Mexico State Police said an off-duty Texas officer who witnessed the crash provided initial medical aid, while other motorists followed the fleeing suspect.
Citizens detained the suspect, identified as Crescencio Castro Baldazo, a few miles from the scene until law enforcement arrived. Investigators believe Baldazo may have been impaired at the time.
He faces charges including homicide by vehicle, careless driving, and failure to maintain a lane. The investigation is ongoing.
